When are the start and end dates for each internship?
We accept internship applications on a rolling basis. While most internships tend to adhere to academic semesters, start and end dates are flexible. The availability of each internship varies every semester, so check back often to see what’s new. The dates below will give you a general idea of when our internships run but we’re happy to work with you to find the best schedule:
12/15 – 2/15
2/1 - 5/15
6/1 - 8/15
What is the interview process like?
Typically, if the internship supervisor decides that an applicant has the potential to be a good fit for PHA based on the materials submitted through the online application, they will set up a brief phone interview. The next step would be an in-person interview at PHA’s office. In the following weeks, the internship supervisor will make the final decision of whether to make an offer to the candidate.
Due to the large volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to status inquiries. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted directly.
How do I apply?
Please apply through PHA’s online application. You will need to upload a resume, properly addressed cover letter and 3-6 page writing sample.
What do I send in for a writing sample?
Feel free to submit any writing sample that you feel best reflects your personal writing style. The topic is your choice! Please apply using PHA’s online application.
Why are the internships at PHA different each semester?
PHA seeks to give hands-on educational opportunities to all of its interns through project-focused internships. We are not interested in providing you with hours of boring administrative work or asking you to fetch coffee for staff. Internship availability changes each semester to account for new projects and activities.
Can I get academic credit for PHA internships?
Interns may earn academic credit, but it is the responsibility of the intern to work with his/her school to determine and fulfill credit requirements.
If you would like to design a project that helps you meet your educational goals, PHA will work with you to achieve this.
Are international students eligible to apply for PHA internships?
PHA has hosted international students in the past, and international student eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis. For more information, please contact the International Programs Coordinator at your school or Internships@PHAssociation.org.
Will PHA attend the internship/career fair at my school?
PHA participates in several internship/career fairs in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Typically, PHA visits the following schools:
- American University
- The Catholic University of America
- Georgetown University
- The George Washington University
- University of Maryland
Even if we do not visit your school, we want to hear from you! Apply using PHA’s online application.
What are my housing options?
PHA does not provide intern housing. However, you may find the following websites useful in your housing search:
How will I get to PHA’s office?
PHA is Metro accessible and is located near various bus routes; there is also garage and street parking available. PHA offers each intern a transportation subsidy to defray the costs of getting to and from our office.
PHA is located at the address below:
801 Roeder Road, Suite 1000
Silver Spring, Maryland 20910
For more information on public transportation in Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas, visit www.wmata.com.
Will I be paid?
PHA's internships are unpaid.
What is daily life like at the PHA office?
PHA’s office is a fun, exciting workplace with a collegial atmosphere. Each intern has their own workspace, and all interns sit in close proximity to each other (we call it "Intern Alley"). Standard working hours at PHA are 9:00am-5:30pm, with up to an hour for lunch. In the past, interns have enjoyed participating in weekly staff meetings (includes a bagel breakfast!), PHA events and staff gatherings. Check out the intern video page for an in-depth look at the experiences of past interns.
Are interns ever hired to work full time?
Several of PHA's current and past staff members started with PHA as interns. Qualified interns are eligible and encouraged to apply for full time positions, when available. PHA also encourages all former interns to regularly check the Staff Openings web page for available positions.
To whom may I direct my questions?
Randall McLeod, Associate Director, Database Services, manages PHA's internship program. He oversees the recruitment and application processes and coordinates intern transitions. While internship supervisors work with interns on a daily basis, Randall serves as the liaison between interns and supervisors for any additional support or concerns.
For all questions related to the internship program, please contact Randall McLeod at Internships@PHAssociation.org.
