Do the high costs of treatment prevent you from receiving treatment you need? Check out the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) Financial Assistance web page, which lists resources to help with the cost of pulmonary hypertension (PH) medication.
The best solution for you depends on the kind of insurance you have, the type of medication you take and availability of financial assistance resources. Here are a few options:
Nonprofit charitable assistance funds. Several nonprofit organizations help cover the high copay costs of PH medications. Most offer assistance only to people who receive insurance through government programs such as Medicare or Medicaid. However, some offer assistance regardless of insurance type. Some provide assistance with insurance premium costs as well. PHA maintains an up-to-date list of those programs.
The PAN foundation’s Fund Finder, which monitors the funds, notifies you when a fund is available. After you create an account, you will receive updates by text or by email when a fund re-opens.
Manufacturer patient assistance programs. Some drug manufacturers offer therapy-specific patient assistance. Eligibility requirements vary by manufacturer and sometimes are restricted to people with commercial health insurance, such as an employer plan. PHA’s Financial Assistance page lists each PH medication and known manufacturer assistance programs. These programs change over time, so contact PHA if you know about an assistance program that’s not listed.
Medicare Extra Help. The Medicare Extra Help program is available to Medicare recipients who meet the program’s limited-income requirements. The program helps with monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments. Visit the Social Security website to learn more and apply.
Marketplace assistance. The Health Insurance Marketplace offers a premium tax credit for people who meet certain income thresholds. Those below certain thresholds might be eligible for cost-sharing reductions that allow them to pay less out of pocket. Visit Healthcare.gov to determine whether you qualify.
Specialty pharmacy assistance programs. Some specialty pharmacies offer financial assistance to customers, typically as a last resort when nothing else is available. The PHA Financial Assistance page includes numbers for major specialty pharmacies.
