2016 Award Winners

PHA’s history is the story of inspired people with the drive to turn ideas into reality. For the seventh consecutive year, Gilead Sciences is funding the Tom Lantos Innovation in Community Service Awards to keep that spirit thriving. Lantos Grants provide individuals with funding of up to $5,000 each to act on original ideas to advance the pulmonary hypertension cause. The following projects have been funded in 2016.

PH Cup for Coffee, by Todor Mangarov Pleven, Bulgaria
This project will create and develop a PH emblem that can be printed on coffee cups/flyers to be distributed throughout Pleven, Bulgaria. The intent is to have these flyers/cups printed and ready for distribution during world PH day as well as Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness month. General information about PH, symptoms and contact information for the Bulgaria association would be included on flyer/cups.

The Kari Bag Project II, by Donna Lain, Cedarpines Park, CA
Kari Bags are in memorial of Donna's daughter who passed away in 2003 from PH, secondary to Lupus. Each bag would contain age appropriate toys, games, stress relievers for children with PH and flyers provided by PHA about the resources for pulmonary hypertension treatment and support. These were distributed to PH Centers, hospitals and doctor offices. In 2011, 750 bags were provided and Donna is making it happen again.

PAH in women, by Milena Naneva¸Sofia, Bulgaria
This project is an initiative for the Bulgarian Society of Patients with Pulmonary Hypertension. While the project will cover general information about PAH, the main focus will be providing emotional and educating support for women PAH patients and their caregivers. This will entail a one-day seminar, utilizing BSPPH's community of medical professionals and resources. PAH in women will also publish and disseminate a brochure/guide with the project title and will cover essential problems faced by women.

Breathe, by Chloe Temtchine, New York, NY
A PH general awareness video based on the original song, "Breathe," written and performed by Chloe Temtchine. The video will feature stunning, professional dancers that will gracefully and elegantly move to a choreographed performance with Oxygen tanks. The video would serve as a public awareness video with the idea of a viral Flash Mob video.

PAH Mexican Friends Reunion, by Adriana Posada, Mexico City, Mexico
The proposed project is to bring together the PH online community of "HAP Friends Mexico." It would be a large undertaking because must coordinate between four regions in Mexico. Bus transportation would be provided for patients and health professionals for the event(s). It is intended to hold a "reunion" in each of the four region.

Caminando Hacia la cima con mi doctor parte 2, by Laura Ranz Carazo, Madrid, Spain
The proposed project is a follow-up from the Lantos funded event in 2014, Sharing Oxygen With My Doctor. This would be a 2 day event in a centralized area for doctors, patients and family to gather without bringing any harm to the patients. This is essentially a conference proposal from Spain's Foundation Against PH (Foundación contra la Hipertensión Pulmonar – FCHP) to bring together their community for the main purpose of educating about PH, building bridges within the community and empowering them to adapt to their new normal.
