Dear PH Community,

Heading into November, we at PHA are gearing up for Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month. This is an exciting and important month for our community as those living with PH and their loved ones and health care professionals join forces to raise awareness of pulmonary hypertension (PH).

This November, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association is launching a new campaign called The Right Heart, which celebrates how adults, teens and children who have PH are living their best lives. The campaign sheds light on PH as a progressive, often misdiagnosed disease that results in high blood pressure of the lungs due to narrowing of the pulmonary arteries. PH forces the right side of the heart to pump so hard to move blood into the lungs that it can lead to right heart failure and death. The campaign will show that with early and accurate diagnosis, quality care and appropriate treatments now available for two forms of PH — pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) — can extend and improve the quality of life for many people living with the disease.

The Right Heart campaign includes a blog, video stories and live events that will begin appearing throughout November on the Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s Facebook page. The Right Heart stories will illustrate how through connecting with others, adults with PH are building lasting friendships, seeking new careers and hobbies, and traveling. Children with PH are growing, thriving and having fun. Live campaign events include question and answer segments with people living with PH, health care professionals and opera singer Charity Tilemann-Dick, granddaughter of the late the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), an early advocate of legislation that would benefit people living with PH. Charity, a PH survivor after receiving two double lung transplants, has been featured in recent weeks in national media on the heels of the release of her new book, “The Encore.”

In addition to raising disease awareness, we are spreading the word about PHA’s programs that provide real-time support for people living with PH and their loved ones and educational and research resources for their health care professionals. The Right Heart campaign includes social media elements that offer ways for people to advocate for policies that support the PH community and join the cause as PHA members, donors and volunteers. The campaign will also use memes and other social media tactics to educate the public about symptoms of PH and diseases that can be associated with PH, including congestive heart disease, pulmonary emboli, pulmonary fibrosis, COPD, scleroderma, lupus and other illnesses.

We’ve created a simple toolkit that gives members of the PH community and the public ways to participate in The Right Heart campaign. That’s where you’ll find our The Right Heart campaign badges and instructions on how to change your social media profile pictures for November. You’ll also find several informational memes where we invite you to select ones that best represent your story, your fight as you spread awareness of PH among your social media friends, family and community.

As we share our Awareness Month campaign tools with our community, we invite you to join our efforts @PHAssociation on Twitter and Instagram and on our Facebook page. Please feel free to contact me at gro.noitaicossAHP@AHPgnoWdarB if you have any questions or concerns, as I always welcome your feedback.
