When Victoria McVie was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) at age 27, she was a newlywed and new homeowner. The PH diagnosis was a huge shock for the Monroe, Connecticut, woman, her husband Matt, and their family and friends.

“She was just embarking on a new chapter of her life when she found out she had PH,” says Leanna Doyle, who has known Victoria since elementary school. “Needless to say, PH was not part of her ‘plan.’”

After Victoria was diagnosed, Leanna committed to helping as much as possible but wasn’t sure how to make an impact. Victoria and her family advised Leanna to donate to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA), a valuable resource and community hub for them.

“The worst feeling in the world is helplessness,” says Leanna, of Stamford, Connecticut. “By donating to PHA … I am doing my part to help those trying to find a cure for this disease.”

Leanna decided to organize a spin-class fundraiser to raise PH awareness and raise money to help PH patients. Her employer matched her donations, which doubled her impact.

“My employer’s matching gift program gives us a chance to make a difference in the community and the world,” Leanna says. “I was proud of the successful event and the company match.”

Leanna has found that listening, being available for her friend and contributing to PHA is the best way she can help Victoria. “She surprises me with her strength and courage,” Leanna says. “She welcomes each day with hope and positivity.”
