The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) congratulates Matthew L. Moreno, an M.D. Candidate at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, for his recent recognition by the American Medical Association (AMA). Moreno’s connection to pulmonary hypertension (PH) is through his support for PH Care for All, an initiative led by Vinicio de Jesus Perez, MD, FCCP, FAHA, and Arunabh Talwar, MD. Moreno’s efforts helped lead to the successful takeoff of the program and the American Thoracic Society research statement, for which he is a co-author. PH Care for All is seeking to level the field for specific populations with the help of 26 expert clinicians and researchers in pulmonary hypertension committed to identifying and addressing barriers to pulmonary hypertension diagnosis and treatment encountered by minority and low income patients. The program’s medical leadership is engaging in new research through which they hope to identify specific barriers unique to underrepresented minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged patients.
In recognition of his work on PH care for minorities, Moreno was awarded the 2017 AMA Excellence in Medicine Award.
The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Leadership Awards recognize students, residents, fellows, and early career physicians for their volunteer service while advancing their leadership skills and building a relationship with the AMA. Leadership Awards were presented to medical students, residents, fellows, and early career physicians who demonstrated strong non-clinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service, public health, and/or education.
