After six pulmonary embolisms in 10 years, shortness of breath, fainting episodes and eventually chest pain, Tonya Gage learned she had CTEPH.

Gage, who leads PHA’s CTEPH Facebook group, recounts her life beyond PTE surgery in the latest issue of Pathlight magazine. She shared her story to support others with PH, help them find answers and feel understood.

“I am very passionate about service and helping others not feel alone,” Gage says. “I’ve especially become interested in how blood clots affect the African American community and other minority groups, as well as women. There needs to be more awareness and research on these particular groups.”

The December issue of Pathlight focuses on chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Three members of PHA’s CTEPH task force discuss what CTEPH is, how it differs from other types of PH, and what PHA is doing to increase awareness of CTEPH risks, symptoms and treatment.

In addition to our CTEPH articles, this issue of Pathlight also features a profile of Diane Dauwalder, who leads PHA’s Fort Worth Support Group. Dauwalder came up with the theme for PHA 2026 International PH Conference and Scientific Sessions, “PHixin’ To Find a Cure.”

Our volunteer spotlight focuses on Olivia Edelen, who leads PHA’s Piedmont PHriends Support Group in Georgia.

Other articles in the December issue include:

  • Avoid Prescription Refill Headaches in the New Year

  • Workshop Wrap-up: Inspiration, Education and Connections
  • Symposium Recap: Care Through Collaboration
