Living with pulmonary hypertension creates plenty of challenges, but it doesn’t stop people from doing what they love. Lakeisha Orr is one of several people who find the strength to enjoy the outdoors. She and others are sharing their stories as part of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s PH Awareness Month campaign, “Live PHearlessly.”
“I have committed to Live PHearlessly as a way to celebrate myself, my body and all that we have faced together over the last several years,” says Lakeshia, who struggled to find the breath and energy to do everyday activities when she was diagnosed a few years ago.
This year, Lakeshia walked up several flights of stairs to enjoy the view from the top of ancient Mayan ruins in Belize. “The view was amazing, but I was more amazed by myself – a PHearless woman living with PH!”
Ethan Park’s diagnosis came with the fear that he would have to give up the fishing tournaments that he loves. “I was afraid PH would hold me back from my long hours enjoying my sport,” Ethan shares. “With the help of my PH team, I’m able to keep fishing and live PHearlessly!”
Stephanie Stephens also is passionate about nature, especially camping in the woods. She’s made changes in her routine, such as staying in places with a cell phone signal and not camping alone. “Minor adjustments allow me to continue to Live PHearlessly,” she says.
What these people share besides their inspiring stories is an unwillingness to define themselves by their PH. “It’s a part of me, but only a part,” says Terrie Keplinger. “I walk through the forest, I climb mountains, I wade through rivers, I curl my toes on sandy beaches…”
