Bosentan is a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the lungs that affects heart function.

Bosentan works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, which decreases pressure and improves heart function. Bosentan is approved for pediatric patients ages 3 years and older.

Quick Reference Information

If the student experiences nausea, vomiting, fever, unusual tiredness, abdominal pain or yellow/orange of the skin or eyes, alert the parent/physician immediately.

How it’s administered

Pediatric formulation is designed to help with dosing and administration for children.

  • 32 mg dispersible tablet to help children who may have trouble swallowing pills.
  • 32 mg dispersible tablet may be divided into halves. Break the tablet along the line. Do not break into quarters.
  • Disperse tablets in a minimal amount of water immediately before administration.
  • Fruit flavored tablet for children.
  • Dosage is typically based on the patient’s weight. The patient’s physician will determine the proper dose.

Common side effects

Bosentan is generally well tolerated.

  • Sinus/lung congestion or infection
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Swelling of the hands and feet (fluid retention)

 Additional information

The student may be absent from school for mandatory monthly blood tests to monitor this medication.

Attention: If the student becomes jaundiced (yellow/orange skin or eyes), call the parents or the physician.
