PHA CEO Update: PHA in the Community

Dear PH Community,

As we approach Labor Day and begin to transition to the fall season, we have an opportunity to reflect on what was a very busy summer for PHA! Without a doubt, June’s Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) 2018 International PH Conference and Scientific Sessions was a highlight of the summer season for us. Our biennial PHA Conference, the pulmonary hypertension (PH) community’s largest gathering of people living with PH, their family members, caregivers, health care professionals, researchers and industry partners, provided a life changing experience for nearly 1,400 attendees. Thank you to all who helped make Conference a success, our more than 100 Conference planning and welcome committee members and onsite volunteers! We look forward to seeing you at PHA’s 2020 International PH Conference and Scientific Session in Anaheim, Calif.

Now, we begin PHA’s fall season of activities in local communities across the country. We are grateful to the thousands of volunteers and community members who organize and participate in local events to help raise awareness and fundraise in support of PHA’s mission, “to extend and improve the lives of those affected by PH.” This fall’s calendar of events is full of opportunities to connect, support and make our community members’ voices heard! I look forward to attending as many events as possible and to meeting and thanking you personally.

In addition to the many O2 breatheTM and community events being held this fall, PHA will be sponsoring two free patient education forums as part of its PHA on the Road educational series. The first event will be in Long Beach, Calif. on September 29, followed by Milwaukee, Wis. on October 27. These day-long programs are organized by local volunteer planning and host committee members who are committed to building support and awareness within their regions. PHA on the Road is an opportunity for patients, caregivers, family and friends to learn from PH experts about the best ways to manage every aspect of a patient’s health. The committee members have designed these events to benefit attendees through presentations by PH expert physicians and interactive Q&A sessions with PH-treating health care professionals. PHA on the Road also presents a place to meet with others in the community affected by PH. For our PH community, this is a place to network, learn and realize that you are not alone!

PHA also welcomes 16 new support groups this fall which will join our current 190 groups in 45 states and help extend our reach to more local communities. We hope you will be able to participate in one of the hundreds of meetings that will be held by the end of this year or if more convenient for you, participate in one of our phone or online support groups from home.

The success in achieving PHA’s mission is because of the passion, collaboration, generosity and commitment of the PH community. I thank you for all that you do to help PHight this disease, both in your personal journeys and in your contributions to the community. If you would like to get more involved in volunteering with PHA, visit our website to learn how. I welcome your thoughts and feedback and invite you to write to me at BradWongPHA@PHAssociation.org.

Best wishes,

Brad A. Wong
