The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) raised more than $200,000 through fundraising events this year. That includes more than 20 virtual events, two golf tournaments and an in-person walk.
The majority of the fundraisers were PHA O2breathe walks conducted virtually because of the pandemic. Participants raised money through an online platform before the celebratory interactive events. Each virtual event featured slideshows of photos from participants set to music; recognition of the highest fundraising team and individual; prize drawings; and information about pulmonary hypertension (PH), PHA’s 30th anniversary and how PHA uses the money raised for services, support and research.
At each virtual event, those who raised at least $250 were eligible to win a $100 Amazon gift card, and all participants were eligible to win PHA prize packs, with branded water bottles, hats, duffel bags and other swag.
This year, the event that raised the most money was Driving Fore a Cure for PH. The golf tournament organized by PHA board member Matt Wall and his wife Jayna Wall, raised more than $60,000 on Nov. 5 at Riverwood Golf Course in Clayton, North Carolina. Matt and Jayna’s 10-year-old son Jackson was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) when he was 14 months old.
The virtual event that raised the most money was the Southern California O2breathe Walk. The Aug. 14 event raised about $22,000.
Texas-based Zebra PHest, held Nov. 6, drew the largest virtual turnout this year. The Dallas-area fundraiser is 14 years old.
One of the longest-running fundraising walks, the Georgia Fun Walk, also took place virtually this year. Participants celebrated the event’s 18th anniversary and remembered its original organizer, former PHA board member Sally Maddox. Sally was a long-time PHA volunteer and a leader of the Greater Atlanta PHA Support Group. She died in December 2018 after living with PH for more than 30 years. Her mother, Mary Felkel, has organized the walk in her honor for the past three years.
Fundraising walks, golf tournaments and other events help PHA provide support, patient and health care professional education and research. They were possible in 2021 thanks to diamond sponsor Janssen Pharmaceuticals, platinum sponsor Bayer and silver sponsors CVS Specialty and United Therapeutics.
