Carol Skeens of Pasadena, Maryland, was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) in 2002. When she learned she had PH, she felt scared and all alone — like no one would understand the rare disease she faced.

Soon after, she found the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA). She spent a lot of time learning about the disease on the PHA website and became involved in PHA’s Facebook communities. Eventually, Carol felt that she could offer advice and guidance to other people in the Facebook community. She also is involved with her local support group.

To give back, Carol supports PHA with a recurring donation deducted from her paycheck each month. Her employer uses United Way to facilitate payroll deductions to charitable organizations.

“I’m so happy and proud to give back to an organization that has given me so much.”

Carol knows her donations directly help patients and advance research to cure PH. “PHA makes patient’s lives better,” she says. “It certainly did for me. I’m confident knowing that my money goes to an effective organization that prioritizes PH patients.”

Carol has found a sense of community with PHA that helps her understand her PH and empowers her to use her knowledge to help others.

“PHA brings patients together and helps us feel like we’re not alone.”
