PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) program at the Houston Methodist Hospital was established in the 1990’s by Dr. Adaani Frost as an outgrowth of the lung transplant program. It was the result of a request by Drs. Lewis Rubin and Stuart Rich for this site to facilitate enrollment in a PH study. Dr. Zeenat Safdar joined the program after completing her clinical and research training and currently serves as the director of the program. This PH program has grown to be a major center for the conduct of clinical trials and a provision of state of the art care to pulmonary hypertension patients. It serves as a referral center for the local community physicians in and around the Houston area. In addition, the referral base for this program draws from a large catchment area including more remote parts of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and other surrounding states, as well as Central and South America. Originally this program was a combined program of Houston Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, however, since 2015 this program has moved in its entirety to Houston Methodist Hospital.

The PH physicians have extensive experience in managing complex PH patients and collaborate with various specialties, including rheumatology, hepatology, heart failure cardiology, anesthesiology, palliative care and solid organ transplant. In addition, there is an inpatient ward with dedicated hospital floors for PH patients, a dedicated pharmacist, and trained clinical nurses and respiratory therapist.

Since its inception, this center has participated in a large number of multicenter clinical trials, many of which led to the development and approval of many therapies. As a leading PH program, more than 60 PH studies have been completed, 10 PAH studies are ongoing and several other are in the pipeline at this site. This places the program at the forefront of cutting edge research.
