PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The University of Iowa’s Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Program was initiated in 1996. PH patients are managed by our medical director, Linda Cadaret, MD, cardiologist, and Alicia Gerke, MD, pulmonologist and two PH clinical coordinators. The University of Iowa was the first hospital in Iowa to receive Magnet recognition in 2004 and is committed to providing care of the highest quality, safety, satisfaction and education. In addition, the University of Iowa is consistently nationally ranked in both cardiology and pulmonary specialty care.

The PH Program is part of the Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) which also includes the Advanced Heart Failure, Thoracic Transplant (heart and lung) and Clinical Research Programs. Patients are offered access to cutting-edge therapies through clinical trials. In addition to our physicians and clinical coordinators, patients are supported by research coordinators, administrative assistants, specialized schedulers, pharmacists and medical assistants. Patients have access to their PH team on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Clinic appointments are located within the HVC. Access to specialty care clinics is in close proximity (Pulmonary, Rheumatology, Digestive Disease etc) is available. Diagnostic testing is centrally located near the HVC as is the inpatient area. Patients are admitted to two designated units, a cardiac step-down unit and Cardiovascular ICU, which have nurses trained in care of patients with pulmonary hypertension and prostacyclin pumps.
