PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The Pulmonary Vascular Program at The University of Kansas Hospital was started by Dr. Steven Stites in 1994. Dr. Timothy Williamson, who trained at KU, returned in 2003 after completing a year of advanced training at UCSD medical center in Pulmonary Vascular Disease, and became program director shortly thereafter. The program is housed at The University of Kansas Hospital and the neighboring Physician Medical Office Building and provides comprehensive and compassionate state of the art care for the region’s PH population The hospital is a 759-bed facility that has been ranked by US News and World Report as the best hospital in Kansas City and the State of Kansas and has multiple recognitions including Magnet Designation. It is a tertiary hospital that provides all services required for the diagnosis and management of PH patients with the exception of lung transplantation. The University of Kansas Hospital currently has three designated units, one general and two ICUs, which maintain specific competencies and expertise in the treatment and care of the pulmonary hypertension patient. The program has designated teams, policies, and procedures to ensure that PH patients receive safe and specialized care that takes into consideration their unique risks, medications, etc. Processes are in place for medication administration, testing in high risk areas (e.g. MRI), and surgical procedures (including accompaniment by a PH competent nurse into the operating room for patients on prostacyclins).
