PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The Pulmonary Hypertension Center at Rhode Island Hospital (RIHPHC) was established in 1991, and has been under the leadership of James R. Klinger, MD since 2001. Dr. Corey Ventetuolo was recruited in 2012 for her expertise in right heart function and extracorporeal life support (ECMO). The center currently has three full-time practitioners who see patients six half-days a week at the outpatient clinic located on the RIH campus. In addition, the center has a full-time research coordinator and three research assistants who oversee the center’s participation in clinical trials and registries of PH. Drs. Klinger and Ventetuolo receive funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association for their work in pulmonary vascular disease and right ventricular function in animals, in health and in the PAH disease state. Right heart catheterizations with exercise and pulmonary vasodilator challenges are performed weekly by Drs. Klinger and Ventetuolo, and the center has established an active collaboration with the division of cardiology for help with left heart catheterizations and diagnostic echocardiography.
