PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The University of Michigan Pulmonary Hypertension Program was established in 1996 by Dr. Melvyn Rubenfire. In 2003, Dr. Vallerie McLaughlin was recruited as director to further grow the program. Educating the state on disease awareness and forming working relationships with a network of referring physicians across the state were top priorities as the program grew. The volume of the program expanded over the ensuing years and there are now 3 PH faculty members, 2.5 FTE clinical nurses, 1.0 FTE clerical support, and 2.0 FTE research support. The program is housed within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan. Outpatient activities occur in the Samuel and Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center, a state-of-the-art facility which integrates cardiovascular care under one roof with a patient and family centered focus. The University Hospital, connected to the Cardiovascular Center by a bridge, serves as the inpatient facility. This is an academic based hospital with the full complement of services and house staff.
