PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC)/UNC Hospitals Pulmonary Hypertension Program has existed in its current structure since 2009. The director completed his fellowship at UNC before joining the faculty, so has been with the institution for nearly a decade. Care is provided principally at UNC Hospitals and associated Pulmonary Specialty Clinic in Chapel Hill. Patients on parenteral therapy (e.g., intravenous/subcutaneous prostacyclin therapies) are cared for in the medical intensive care unit (MICU), cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), and pulmonary ward. The program includes a satellite clinic location in Sanford, NC that shares the same electronic medical record (EMR) and diagnostic testing facilities with the main campus. The program serves patients in North Carolina, as well as parts of Virginia and South Carolina.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill/UNC Hospitals Pulmonary Hypertension Program includes a core group of three physicians, nurse coordinator and a research coordinator that work well as a team. Close collaborations have been fostered with the Division of Cardiology and with neighboring Duke University, with whom the program has organized an annual regional PH symposium for providers and patients.
