PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado has been a national referral center for patients from newborns through young adulthood with pulmonary hypertension for the last 20 years. One of the largest dedicated pediatric programs of its kind, the center focuses on early detection and treatment that encourages improved quality of life.

The pulmonary hypertension team is widely recognized as a national leader in the treatment of PH in children. Founded in 1995 by director Dr. David Dunbar Ivy, the multidisciplinary team also includes physicians, pediatric nurse practitioners and nurse coordinators from cardiology and pulmonology specialties, respiratory therapists and pharmacists. They integrate PH experts from neonatology, pulmonology, rheumatology, hematology and critical care in the individualized care that their patients receive. The team has contributed to the current written national recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of PH in children and have participated in many of the pivotal clinical trials for novel PH medications. With a strong emphasis on screening and continued monitoring for at-risk populations, this approach enables the program to diagnose and initiate treatment as early as possible.
