PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children’s Hospital PediatricPulmonary Hypertension (PPH) Program historically began in the 1970s with Dr. AbeRudolph’s landmark studies describing the normal and abnormal fetal, transitional, and postnatal pulmonary blood flow patterns. In 2011, Drs. Jeffrey Fineman (pediatric intensivist) and Roberta Keller (neonatologist) organized a multidisciplinary group to expand the UCSF PPH research and inpatient focus into the outpatient setting with Dr. Laura Robertson (pediatric cardiologist). In 2012, the service added a pediatric nurse practitioner, social worker, pediatric clinical pharmacist, and dietician. The service also has a program administrator and a research analyst to support clinical trials.

In 2015, UCSF opened its freestanding state-of-art children’s hospital at Mission Bay. This 50-acre campus includes the hospital, outpatient facility, and a multitude of research institutes. This new facility also includes 24 pediatric cardiac ICU/ TCU beds, 32 PICU/TCU beds and 58 NICU beds, to house the program’s patients as needed. The PPH clinic is located in the cardiopulmonary area with exam rooms, echocardiography, and exercise and pulmonary function labs, allowing the program’s patients to receive comprehensive outpatient care.

In addition to the program’s patient care and research focus, UCSF has a rich tradition of medical education and training, which continues within the PPH Program. In 2006, UCSF organized the first annual International Conference on Neonatal and Childhood PulmonaryVascular Disease. This conference serves as a platform for international PH leaders to come together and share the latest clinical and research information. This conference provides education and support programs for caretakers, patients and families.
