If you’re a member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA), the latest issue of Pathlight should have arrived in your mail. The August issue of PHA’s quarterly magazine addresses “PH in a Pandemic,” research breakthroughs and inspirational stories from people with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and their loved ones.

Here are five standout features from the current issue:

Six members of the community share how the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic affected their lives, livelihoods and families. Keith Andacky, Wayne Beall, Elsa DaSigo, Patsy Fleniken, James Rider and Rebecca Swartley open up about coping with the challenges of the new coronavirus.

Aaron Waxman, M.D., Ph.D., relates his experiences treating COVID-19 patients during the first three months of the pandemic. Dr. Waxman, director of Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program, led an ICU team dedicated to fighting the virus.

Ann Benner celebrates the power of technology to connect the PH community. She describes how PHA’s virtual support group meetings provide a lifeline for her brother Robert Tropiano, who has chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), and their family.

Chris Lee pays tribute to his father, Xavier Chung-Pah Lee, who died in April 2020, less than a year after his pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) diagnosis. Xavier, who came to the U.S. as a young man, was a successful marketing executive who raised two sons, loved basketball and lived the American dream.

Ke Yuan shares how her childhood passion for science led to career in PH research. She works to create a better understanding of PAH and hopes her research will lead to new treatments. Dr. Yuan was the 2019 recipient of PHA’s Aldrighetti Award for Young Investigators. PHA is accepting applications for the 2020 award through Oct. 1.
