Dr. Robyn J. Barst Pediatric PH Research and Mentoring Fund Grant Winner 2013
Mehdi Fini, MD
Instructor in the Divison of Pulmonary and Critical Care
University of Colorado Denver
Title: “Role of Xanthine Oxidoreductase-Uric Acid Axis in Hypoxia Induced Pulmonary Hypertension”
Term: December 1, 2013 through November 30, 2014
This Barst Fund Award was made possible through a generous, anonymous donation in honor of pediatric PH patient Cordelia.
Summary of Research Project:
There are currently few prognostic and therapeutic options for pediatric patients with PH. However, preliminary research indicates that uric acid level may be a valid biomarker for predicting risk of PH-associated death in children, and some studies have found an association between high uric acid blood concentration and probability of a PH diagnosis in both children and adults. In the current project, Dr. Fini will investigate uric acid’s usefulness as a biomarker of disease onset and progression. He will also examine whether or not reducing uric acid can be used to treat PH. Dr. Fini will conduct his study using a novel genetic model which could ultimately improve the management of pediatric patients with PH.
