Andrea Redstone-Henry of Indianapolis is an exercise specialist at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital. Redstone-Henry has two sons. One is a sophomore in high school and the other is a police officer. The family has four cats and one dog.
I started helping in the hospital’s clinic this year and was really excited about the opportunity. I love speaking to patients and providing support. Seeing the patient get together and feel hopeful had me hooked. My interest in PH grew, and I started to help organize PHA support group meetings in Indianapolis.
I became a Pulmonary Hypertension Association volunteer to learn more about PH and help others learn more about it. The most rewarding part is seeing people get support from clinicians and nurses who work at the hospital, from the PHA staff and each other.
Any type of chronic disease is hard to manage, but when you can lean on caregivers and support groups, it can make a big difference. I love to hear patients’ stories and speak with them outside of the clinic walls.
Our attendance ranges from eight to 15 people per meeting, and our numbers keep growing. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month.
I am most proud of being able to work with the most educated and compassionate people here at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital. My family inspires me as well as my faith in God.
If you are considering starting a PHA support group, go for it. I am so blessed to meet with the patients and staff every month. It’s nice to share a meal and come together for a common thread.
