PHA Centers of Comprehensive Care

History

The Duke Pulmonary Vascular Disease Center was established in 1991 and has a history of excellence in clinical care and research. It includes a core group of three physicians who specialize in both cardiology and pulmonology (Drs. Fortin, Rajagopal and Dahhan), three nurse clinicians (Aimee Babiera, Gina Campanile and Lisa Carver) and three clinical research coordinators (Karla Kennedy, Susana Almeida-Peters and Markedia Mason) that work closely as a team. Drs. Fortin and Rajagopal became co-directors of the program in 2017. The program will be welcoming two additional physicians in July 2018.

The Duke PVDC is a comprehensive care center that provides access to all types of PH therapies as well as pulmonary endarterectomy and balloon angioplasty for chronic thromboembolic PH. A number of research studies are also available to patients. We also work closely with the nationally renowned Duke Heart and Lung transplant programs.

Patients on parenteral therapy (e.g., intravenous/subcutaneous prostacyclin therapies) are cared for on a dedicated pulmonary ward as well as in the medical and cardiac intensive care units. On each of the floors admitting patients on parenteral prostacyclin, nurses and pharmacists have been trained in the proper administration and management of advanced PH therapies. There is a 24/7 consult Pulmonary Vascular Disease pager that provides coverage for all patients with pulmonary vascular disease and works closely with the pulmonary and intensive care unit teams. The program serves patients from a large catchment area including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.
