The Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s ability to make a difference in the lives of those affected by pulmonary hypertension relies heavily on the generosity of our supporters. While cash donations help, there are other impactful ways of giving that can maximize contributions and potentially offer additional financial benefits to the donors. These “smart giving” vehicles help donors make a greater impact on PHA’s mission while making financial decisions that align with personal and charitable goals.

For donors aged 70½ or older, consider giving a qualified charitable distribution from an individual retirement account. This is an easy way to support PHA while potentially satisfying required minimum distributions and excluding the amount donated from taxable income.

Give from your IRA

Donor-advised funds are a smart way to manage your philanthropy. Donor-advised funds are created by transferring a variety of assets to a commercial or community DAF provider, which may provide tax relief. Then, donors have the opportunity to recommend a grant to PHA straight from their fund at a cadence of their choosing. This flexible and empowering method of giving allows donors to contribute cash, securities and even certain types of real estate. This method of giving is particularly advantageous for bundling tax incentives into a particular year while maintaining your annual support of PHA.

Sharing appreciated assets like stocks is a powerful way to help. By donating stocks, bonds or mutual funds, you might avoid capital gains tax on the rise in the asset’s value, and instead, directly fuel our mission to fight PH.

We have a granddaughter who was diagnosed with idiopathic PAH at age four. Cordelia is now in college and has been able to benefit from the recent addition of Winrevair (sotatercept-csrk) to the medications helping PAH patients.

We have been fortunate to be able to donate to PHA pediatric research. And while donating, we have taken advantage of the Qualified Charitable Distribution while giving from our traditional IRAs. We don’t expect our donations to result in immediate improvements for PAH patients, but it is thrilling to observe an example where research led to a wonderful improvement.
